PLACES IN THE RIMINI HINTERLAND

Rimini hinterlandThe most evocative places to visit in the hinterland, on foot or by bike, are: Villa Verucchio, a town steeped in Villanovan culture which still preserves, in its Civic Museum, archaeological finds of great significance; Santarcangelo di Romagna, which reached the height of its splendour in the 1700s; San Leo, situated in the Marecchia Valley, at the heart of the Montefeltro region; and Morciano, known as the commercial capital, situated in the heart of the Conca Valley and considered an ancient land of fairs and markets.

A major attraction of the Romagna hinterland is the Republic of San Marino, considered the oldest republic in the world. Another rather picturesque village is Mondaino, situated on the crest of a hill some 420 metres above sea level in the far south-east of the city of Rimini, on the border with Montefeltro; its historic centre preserves an extraordinary 16th-century heritage.

In the Rimini hinterland, the main attractions worth visiting are, above all, the Rocca Malatestiana or Roccia del Sasso, and the Domus del Chirurgo – the significant archaeological complex that has always been at the heart of a museum development project.

Following years of extensive work by archaeologists, an ancient residence used for both private and professional purposes has come to light from the excavation carried out right in the centre of one of Rimini’s most famous squares, Piazza Ferrari.

What is particularly remarkable is that a complete set of surgical instruments was found amongst the artefacts, from which the domus takes its name.

Excavations have been carried out right up until very recently, and just a few months ago, the surgeon’s domus was officially opened and made accessible to visitors from both the local area and further afield, marking an event of particular cultural interest.

Other important historical and artistic attractions in the city of Rimini include the Malatesta Castle and the large squares steeped in history and culture (Piazza Tre Martiri, Piazza Malatesta, Piazza Mazzini), where you can admire some truly picturesque views.
