Faenza Cathedral. A Renaissance jewel in the heart of Romagna

The Cathedral of Faenza, dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle, is one of the most important examples of Renaissance architecture of theEmilia-Romagna. It stands in the centre of Freedom Square, the beating heart of the city, and it is a landmark not only religious but also historical e artistic. Construction began in 1474, by order of the bishop Federico Manfredi, designed by the Florentine architect Giuliano of Maiano. The work continued throughout the following century, leaving the city with a cathedral solemn and imposing.

La façade, made from exposed brickwork, remained unfinished and today has a simple, austere appearance that contrasts with the refinement of the interiors. The interior, at three naves, is punctuated by columns made of pietra serena which support round arches, in a harmony of proportions that evokes the purity of the Tuscan classicism. Theapse, which is semi-circular in shape, houses a high altar at polychrome marble, surmounted by a ciborium exquisitely crafted.

Particularly striking is the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, enhanced by a marble tabernacle and frescoes depicting scenes from the Gospels.

The Cathedral is also an important centre for religious life: the main ones are celebrated there liturgical feasts, as well as civil ceremonies of great significance to the city. Every year, during the period Christmas and on the occasion of the Holy Week, the cathedral comes alive with events, concerts e celebrations which involve the whole community.
