Hidden in the folds of the Chalk Vein of Romagna, the Cave of King Tiberius is one of the most fascinating places in Emilia-Romagna. Located upstream of Borgo Rivola, a hamlet of Riolo Terme, this natural cavity is an unmissable destination for those wishing to explore the most mysterious and primordial side of the territory.
With over 6 kilometres in length and a difference in altitude of over 200 metres, the cave is part of an impressive karst system, a veritable treasure chest that holds thousands of years of history, archaeological evidence and breathtaking underground landscapes.
A site frequented by man for millennia
King Tiberius' Cave is not only a geological phenomenon: it is also an archaeological site of great importance. Traces of human presence, found during stratigraphic excavations carried out as early as the 19th century, tell of a use that dates back to the Copper Age and continued into Roman times. For centuries, this cavity was a refuge, a place of worship and a point of passage.
Even today, exploring it means embarking on a journey through time, between chalk walls moulded by water and time, immersed in a deep and evocative silence.

The visit: two experiences, one emotion
The cave can only be visited with a caving guide and lends itself to two types of experience:
-
Tourist routedesigned for everyone, it includes an accessible section of about 60 metres to the impressive Sala Gotica. The route, which lasts about 90 minutes in total, simply requires comfortable clothes and shoes with treaded soles. It is an adventure suitable for families, nature lovers and the curious.
-
Speleological routeFor the more adventurous, it is possible to continue, with appropriate equipment, along an extension of about 200 metres into wilder and more fascinating environments. This more technical experience allows you to get to the heart of the underground world, experiencing the cave as cavers do.
Visits are organised in small groups to ensure maximum safety and an authentic enjoyment of the site.
A visitor centre dedicated to the underground world
Not far from the cave, along the road connecting Borgo Rivola to Casola Valsenio, there is a modern Visitor Centre dedicated to karstification and speleology. Housed in a renovated structure, the centre offers an educational and immersive experience to understand the geological phenomena that gave rise to the Chalk Vein, with 3D models, interactive exhibits and historical materials.
A visit to the centre is recommended in order to better prepare oneself before entering the cave or to learn more about what was discovered during the underground tour.
