The Malatestiana Library: a heritage site unique in the world
The star of the evening is, of course, the Malatestiana Library, a true symbol of Cesena and one of the most important historic libraries in the world. Opened in 1454 by the will of Domenico Malatesta Novello, represents the Europe’s first public library and the only humanities library to have survived to the present day in a perfectly preserved state, in terms of its architectural structure, original furnishings and the arrangement of its manuscripts.
From 2005 it is entered in the register UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme, a distinction reserved for documentary heritage of exceptional universal value. It was the first Italian library to receive this important honour and remains one of the most precious cultural sites in Emilia-Romagna. Upon entering the historic Nuti Lecture Theatre, designed by the architect Matteo Nuti, time seems to have stood still: the wooden desks, the large windows, the columns and the ancient manuscripts still kept in their original places tell the story of an era when books were extremely rare and precious.

Walking amongst the ancient wooden benches, illuminated by the flickering candlelight, allows you to observe details that can easily be missed during a traditional visit. The initiative has been conceived and organised by the DMC of the Savio Trails, an organisation dedicated to promoting tourism in the Cesena area and the Savio Valley through experiences that combine culture, nature, history and food and wine. The Notturnali are one of the summer’s most unique events, not least because of the limited number of participants. Each session is, in fact, designed to maintain an intimate, quiet and engaging atmosphere.
