The origins of Sassofeltrio are intertwined with the history of the great feudal lords of the Middle Ages. It is first mentioned in the 8th century, the village was known as Castrum Saxi and was an important strategic outpost contested by the The Malatesta family of Rimini and the Montefeltro of Urbino.
