Sustainable tourism

Tourism and sustainability are two concepts that are closely linked.

Sustainable tourism refers to a way of travelling that takes into account the environmental, social and economic impact of tourist activities.

The aim is to ensure that tourist destinations are conserved and protected for future generations, whilst preserving the culture and heritage of local communities.

To promote sustainable tourism, it is necessary to adopt responsible practices, such as reducing pollution, saving energy, managing waste properly and using renewable resources. Furthermore, it is important to involve local communities and ensure they benefit, whilst safeguarding their traditions and improving their living conditions.

Sustainable tourism offers numerous benefits, including the conservation of the natural environment, the promotion of cultural diversity, increased employment and economic opportunities for local communities, and raising tourists’ awareness of the need to conserve and respect the environment and local cultures.

However, a joint effort is needed on the part of governments, tour operators, local communities and tourists themselves to make sustainable tourism a reality. Only through responsible and informed management of tourism can we ensure a better future for tourist destinations and for the planet as a whole.

An example of sustainable tourism

An example of sustainable tourism in Italy is the Gran Paradiso National Park.

Situated between the regions of Piedmont and the Aosta Valley, the park is one of the oldest in Italy and was established in 1922 to protect the flora, fauna and landscape of the Graian Alps.

The park promotes sustainable tourist activities, such as hiking, trekking and wildlife watching, which allow visitors to enjoy the region’s natural beauty without compromising the ecological balance.

In addition, there are eco-friendly accommodation facilities, and visitors are made aware of the importance of protecting the surrounding environment.

The Gran Paradiso National Park is also committed to conserving biodiversity and protecting rare and endangered species, such as the chamois, the golden eagle and the bearded vulture, through monitoring and reintroduction programmes.

This example demonstrates how sustainable tourism can be an opportunity to make the most of a region’s natural resources, whilst at the same time promoting environmental conservation and the well-being of the local community.

What to do if you own a property to ensure it meets the criteria for sustainable tourism

A tourist accommodation or hotel must implement various practices and initiatives in order to promote sustainable tourism. Some examples might include:

Responsible water management: The property should promote water saving through the use of water-efficient fittings, such as water-saving showers, low-flow taps and drip irrigation systems. Furthermore, it is important to implement water recycling and rainwater harvesting schemes.

Energy efficiency: The hotel should adopt policies and technologies that reduce energy consumption, such as the use of LED lighting, the installation of motion-sensor-controlled lighting, the adjustment of heating and cooling systems to meet actual needs, and the thermal insulation of rooms.

Use of renewable energy: The property should invest in renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind turbines to reduce the use of fossil fuels and carbon emissions.

Waste management: A system for the separate collection of waste should be put in place, and the waste generated should be recycled and composted. Furthermore, it is important to minimise the use of single-use materials and to promote the use of biodegradable products.

Involvement of local communities: The property should work with local communities to promote local employment, the use of local products and services, and to support socio-economic development projects.

Raising visitors’ awareness: The hotel should provide information on the sustainable practices it has put in place and encourage visitors to behave responsibly, such as respecting the surrounding natural environment, saving energy and water, and using sustainable transport.

Conservation of the natural environment: The tourist accommodation should adopt policies to minimise its impact on natural resources, such as the protection of local flora and fauna, the conservation of protected areas and the reduction of light pollution.

These are just some of the measures that a holiday accommodation or hotel can take to support sustainable tourism. The main aim is to reduce environmental impact and promote the social and economic well-being of local communities.
