Its current appearance is largely due to Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, who made it one of his favourite residences.

But what makes the castle even more famous is the legend that has surrounded it for over seven centuries: the The Love Story of Paolo and Francesca, as told by Dante Alighieri at Canto V of *Inferno*. It is said that the two lovers were caught and killed in one of the rooms of the fortress by Gianciotto Malatesta, Francesca’s husband. That room — which has since been reconstructed — is one of the most popular with visitors, and continues to move generations of visitors.
