As it does every year, Cervia is getting ready for the Christmas festivities with style and simplicity.
Cervia is known not only as a beautiful seaside resort but also as the ‘City of Salt’ (its salt pans are famous), and a town with such a reputation simply had to create a nativity scene made of salt to mark the Christmas festivities.
This tradition began in 1992, when a master salt sculptor created 15 salt figurines depicting the Nativity; these figurines are now housed in the Cervia Salt Museum and are used every year to create one of the most fascinating nativity scenes in Italy.
Another evocative nativity scene, also in Cervia, is the animated nativity scene set up in the Chiesa del Suffragio in Cervia, featuring 30 clay figurines that ‘move’ within a landscape whose atmosphere changes – in fact, it transitions from day to night as if it were a ‘real’ place – but that’s not all!
The town of Cervia organises street parties, music and dancing, with small bands playing for passers-by, as well as jugglers and street performers who delight and entertain the children, who will also take centre stage on the ice rink that the Cervia local council has set up in the town.
The town’s streets will all be lit up with sparkling, twinkling decorations and fairy lights, providing the backdrop to the many Christmas markets that will fill the centre of Cervia.
Finally, the moment everyone has been waiting for: New Year’s Eve 2015 in Cervia! The celebrations will begin in the afternoon, when guests and the residents of Cervia will gather in the town’s central streets, beneath the giant Christmas tree erected for the festive season, for a New Year’s Eve aperitif, accompanied by live music from bands and groups.
The bars and restaurants in the town centre are getting ready to offer tastings of Romagna specialities, and everyone in the square will be waiting for the New Year to end and will welcome in 2015 in high spirits, accompanied by hearty toasts and spectacular fireworks.
The 2014/2015 season in Cervia will be brought to a close by the New Year’s Concert, which will take place at 4.00 pm at the Teatro Comunale, and on 1 January in Piazza Garibaldi with the traditional concert by the Teatro Comunale Band.
