Church of Sant'Agostino in Rimini history and curiosities

The Church of St Augustine in Rimini is a religious building of great historical and cultural importance.

Its history dates back to the 13th century, when the Augustinian monastic complex was founded by the Augustinian friars.

The building, situated in the historic centre of Rimini, is an example of Gothic architecture and features a terracotta façade.

The church was built in honour of Saint Augustine, one of the most important theologians and philosophers of the Catholic Church.

Inside the church there are frescoes and works of art of great value, including an 18th-century painting depicting Saint Augustine in glory.

One of the interesting facts about the Church of Sant’Agostino is the presence of a plaque commemorating Dante Alighieri’s stay within the monastic complex. According to tradition, the poet took refuge there during his exile from Florence and was able to compose some verses of the Divine Comedy whilst inside the church.

Another interesting fact about this church concerns its bell tower, which has always remained unfinished and without a dome.

Its present form dates back to the 17th century.

Over the centuries, the Church of St Augustine has undergone major restoration and renovation work, which has helped to preserve its historical and artistic value.

Today, the church is still used for religious services and is an important landmark for worshippers and tourists visiting Rimini.
