Rocca Fregoso: the fairytale fortress in the heart of Sant’Agata Feltria

Perched high on the picturesque Wolf Rock, the Fregoso Fortress has towered over the picturesque village of Sant’Agata Feltria, in the heart of the Rimini Apennines. This imposing building, which today houses the famous Museum of the Rocca delle Fiabe, is one of the most fascinating examples of the noble and architectural history of the Montefeltro region. Its walls, which seem to rise from the rock itself, tell tales of battles, love affairs, alliances and legends, in a blend that combines the rigour of medieval fortification with the grace of the Italian Renaissance.

Ancient origins: from the earliest defences to the rule of the Montefeltro family

The origins of Rocca Fregoso date back to 10th century, when the Count Raniero Cavalca of Bertinoro He decided to build an initial defensive stronghold on the rocky outcrop overlooking the present-day town. This naturally strategic position allowed control over the surrounding valleys and the transport routes linking Romagna with Montefeltro and Tuscany.

For several centuries, the fortress served a purely military purpose, acting as a symbol of power and a defence against raids. But it was in the 15th century, with the arrival of the Montefeltro, which profoundly changed its history.

Gentile da Montefeltro and Agostino Fregoso: a union of power and culture

In 1474, the Duke of Urbino Federico da Montefeltro, one of the most illustrious lords of the Renaissance, gave to his illegitimate daughter Dear a series of fiefdoms, including the The District of Sant’Agata Feltria, which became the heart of a small but refined estate.

Dear Mr Sposò, Agostino Fregoso, a member of the noble Genoese family with ties to the Republic of Genoa and related to the Montefeltro family. From this marriage was born the Sant’Agata dei Fregoso line, who would go on to rule the county for almost two centuries. Their children — including Federigo, future cardinal, and Octavian, who was destined to become Doge of Genoa — brought prestige and renown to the family.

It was during this period that the fortress took on the elegant and harmonious form that we still admire today: a fortified residence, but also a stately home, embellished with Renaissance architectural features.

The touch of Francesco di Giorgio Martini

Although there are no definitive records, the final design of the Rocca Fregoso is attributed to the great architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, the same person who helped build the The Ducal Palace in Urbino.

His contribution is evident in the clean lines, in the symmetry of the towers and in the sophisticated blend of military functionality and aesthetic harmony. The most distinctive feature is the polygonal tower, known as Simonetto Fregoso Tower, which gives the fortress a unique silhouette, perfectly integrated with the cliff below.

The building, constructed entirely from local sandstone, it towers over the village and blends into the landscape, creating a truly evocative, picturesque scene.

A refuge and residence for distinguished figures

Over the following centuries, the Rocca Fregoso was the scene of significant historical events. In the 1501, for example, found refuge there Guidobaldo I of Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino and half-brother of Countess Gentile, forced to flee from the troops of Cesare Borgia.

Ottaviano Fregoso, a soldier and prominent politician, valiantly defended Sant’Agata and in the 1513 He was made a count by the Pope Leo X. Two years later, he was elected Doge of Genoa, whilst maintaining close ties with his home county. On his death in 1524, the administration passed to his brother Federigo and to his son Aurelio, who continued to live in the fortress and the stately home in the village.

In 1631, the fortress played host to another important chapter in Italian history: the Cardinals Antonio and Taddeo Barberini, sent by the Pope Urban VIII to take possession of the Duchy of Urbino, which passed to the Papal States following the death without heirs of Francesco Maria II Della Rovere.

From Decline to Revival

With the incorporation of the county into the Papal State, in the 1660, the Rocca Fregoso gradually ceased to serve as a noble residence and entered a long period of decline.

Between XVIII and the 19th century, it was used for various purposes: Franciscan monastery from 1781 to 1820, then military prison, and finally school. The the collapse of the keep in 1835 and the constant water seepage seriously threatened the stability of the building, making major consolidation work necessary in 1877.

It was only in the final decades of the 20th century that the fortress became the subject of a meticulous conservation restoration, which has restored one of the most fascinating examples of fortified architecture in the Apennines for the public to enjoy.

La Rocca delle Fiabe: where history meets magic

Today, Rocca Fregoso has been given a new lease of life thanks to a new cultural role. On the initiative of the great scholar and writer Antonio Faeti, the Fairy-Tale Castle, a permanent museum dedicated to the world of fairy tales and storytelling for children.

The ancient halls of the castle, once home to nobles and knights, now house art installations, interactive experiences and temporary exhibitions inspired by folk tales and legends. Each room evokes a different theme: the tower becomes the home of princesses and heroes, the dungeons are transformed into the realm of the forest spirits, whilst the corridors come alive with voices and lights that guide visitors on a journey through history and fantasy.

La Fairy-Tale Castle It is now one of the most iconic sites in Sant’Agata Feltria, an ideal destination for families, school groups and lovers of art and literature.

A fortress that stands the test of time

A visit to Rocca Fregoso is like taking a journey through time, from the era of the Renaissance lords right up to the present day, set against a natural and architectural backdrop of rare beauty. From the panoramic terrace, the view stretches out over the rooftops of Sant’Agata and the rolling hills of the Montefeltro, amongst woods, streams and ancient villages that retain all the charm of history.

Today, the fortress is symbol of identity of the region and a testament to the convergence of power, art and imagination. A place that tells not only the story of the Fregoso and Montefeltro families, but also that of an Italy capable of transforming its ruins into places of culture and wonder.
