Piazza Cavour in Rimini

Piazza Cavour is one of the main squares in Rimini, a city located on the Adriatic coast of central Italy, in the region of Emilia-Romagna. The square is named after Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, one of the main protagonists of Italian unification in the 19th century.

History: The square has a long and interesting history dating back to the time of the ancient Romans. In the past, it was known as the 'Market Square' or 'Piazza Grande' and was the centre of the city's commercial and social life. During the Middle Ages, the square also hosted tournaments and important festivals.

Over the centuries, the square has undergone several transformations and renovations. During the Fascist period, it was enlarged and modernised according to the architectural principles of the time. In the post-war period, it underwent further modifications to adapt to new urban requirements.

Today, Piazza Cavour is a lively and animated pedestrian square. It is surrounded by beautiful historical buildings, cafés, restaurants and shops.

What to visit today:

  1. Palazzo dell'Arengo: Located on the square, this medieval building was used as the seat of the city government in the past. Today it hosts exhibitions and cultural events.
  2. Amintore Galli Theatre: A historic theatre located on the square, it was opened in 1857 and offers plays, concerts and operas.
  3. Statue of Cavour: In the centre of the square is a statue dedicated to Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, one of the founding fathers of united Italy.
  4. Church of San Gaudenzo: Located near the square, this medieval church is one of the main places of worship in Rimini. Inside you can admire frescoes and ancient works of art.
  5. Fontana della Pigna: A large fountain located in the heart of the square, it is a popular meeting place for residents and visitors.
  6. Promenade on the Lungomare: From the piazza, you can easily reach Rimini's promenade with its beautiful sandy beaches and seafront promenade.

In addition, the square is surrounded by numerous shops, restaurants and cafés, offering the possibility of shopping and sampling the local cuisine. It is a lively and animated place, especially during the summer months, when the city fills up with tourists.
