The origins of the village
The history of Mondaino has its roots in times long past. Archaeological finds bear witness to human presence dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. During the Roman period, the area probably housed a temple dedicated to Diana, the goddess of the hunt, underlining the deep connection between these lands and the wilderness.
The very name ‘Mondaino’ evokes its history as a fortified settlement: according to scholars, it is thought to derive from the Gothic language Mundawins, “a protected place”, a fact also confirmed by Leonardo da Vinci’s famous topographical map, which referred to the village as “Monda”.
During the Middle Ages, Mondaino was an important military outpost, contested between the Commune of Rimini and the Duchy of Urbino. Its fate became intertwined with that of the region’s great noble families, the Malatesta and the Montefeltro, who took turns in conquering its walls, leaving indelible marks on the town’s urban layout and fortifications.

Dominating the square and the entire village is the Malatesta Fortress, a stone stronghold and a testament to the past. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries and subsequently extended by Sigismondo Malatesta, the Rocca still retains its secret passageways, its towers and its unrivalled view stretching from the sea to the Montefeltro. Today it houses the Town Hall and the Museums of Mondaino, which preserve the local history.
Not far away, the Porta Marina, the ancient access route to the village, now home to the Torre Portaia Exhibition, which offers visitors a glimpse into the daily lives of 15th-century soldiers.

Inside the fortress, the Palaeontological Museum tells even older stories, displaying fossils dating back to the Upper Miocene, whilst the Permanent Exhibition of Majolica celebrates a recently rediscovered tradition of craftsmanship, in which Mondaino was one of the leading centres of fine ceramics in the 16th–18th centuries.
Events that bring the village to life
Mondaino’s cultural life is vibrant and authentic, punctuated by unmissable events.
The most famous is undoubtedly the Palio de lo Daino, which every year in August transforms the hamlet into a veritable medieval village. For four days, neighbourhoods dressed in period costume compete in games, duels and parades, whilst artisans, musicians and storytellers fill the streets, recreating the atmosphere of 1459, the year the peace treaty was signed between Sigismondo Malatesta and Federico da Montefeltro.
In September, the aroma of culinary tradition becomes more intense with Fossa, Tartufo and Cerere, the market that showcases the region’s traditional produce, including the famous DOP pit-aged cheese.
Also not to be missed is the Latinus Ludus, a Latin translation competition held in memory of Don Sebastiano Sanchini, a distinguished figure from Mondaino and tutor to Giacomo Leopardi.
