Just a stone’s throw from the historic heart of the Republic of San Marino, amongst the wooded slopes overlooking the Adriatic coast, stands an imposing rock face known as La Tanaccia. Approximately 10 metres and long more than 15, this limestone formation represents a real hub for sport climbing on Mount Titano. Not only for its technical merit, but also for the important role it has played in popularising this sport throughout San Marino.
A landmark spot for local climbers
La Tanaccia is considered the the first officially equipped climbing wall in San Marino. Its history began in 1985, thanks to the determination and vision of three enthusiasts: Marco Casali (known as Caffa), Alberto Belletti e Giovanni Renzi. At a time when sport climbing was in its infancy in Italy, these pioneers transformed a natural rock face into an accessible, safe and challenging venue for local climbers and visitors alike.
In 1998, the entire sector was the subject of a complete refurbishment with resin-bonded dowels, a project carried out by Giovanni Renzi in collaboration with Francesco Santamaria of theItalian Air Force, Rimini, which ensured the routes would remain safe and durable for future generations as well.

The wall features marked handholds, natural handholds and well-spaced moves, ideal for practising technique, balance and confidence in one’s abilities. At the top, which is easily accessible, the following have been installed: resin-bonded dowels which enable abseiling and ascending manoeuvres: a particularly useful feature for mountain guides and instructors.
Easy access, a comprehensive experience
One of the main advantages of the Tanaccia is theaccessibility. It is situated just a few minutes’ drive from the historic centre of San Marino, along the scenic road that winds its way up the mountain. The nearest car park It is situated at a bend, in a convenient and well-signposted area. From there, a a well-marked path surrounded by vegetation leads in just 5 minutes to a small clearing with a wooden table, ideal for taking a break or getting your kit ready.
From here, you head down a short side path on the right, which leads to the base of the crag after just a few metres. The setting is peaceful and scenic, surrounded by wild vegetation and a tranquillity that makes the experience all the more rewarding.

Thanks to its favourable exposure and thanks to the natural protection provided by the surrounding woodland, La Tanaccia can be visited in almost every season. In spring and autumn, you can enjoy ideal temperatures and breezy days, whilst in summer the shade of the trees provides some relief from the heat during the hottest part of the day.
