Mount Fumaiolo (1,407 m above sea level) is the highest peak in the Cesena Apennines, situated in the municipality of Verghereto (FC), on the border between Romagna, Tuscany and the Marche. It is famous for being home, at an altitude of 1,268 m, to the source of the River Tiber, known as the ‘river sacred to the destiny of Rome’. In addition to the Tiber, the River Savio and other major streams also have their sources on this mountain.
The name ‘Fumaiolo’ may derive from the word ‘fumo’ (smoke), as the summit is often shrouded in clouds that resemble rising smoke, or from ‘flumen’ (river), due to the presence of numerous springs on the mountain.
The mountain is surrounded by vast beech forests, the famous ‘Faggete’, which can be explored via trails on foot or by mountain bike, offering spectacular views of the Romagna coast, the Tuscan hills as far as Monte Amiata, and the Apennines of the Marche and Umbria regions.
Historically, Mount Fumaiolo and the surrounding area have served as an important mountain pass and a natural and political boundary. Even in ancient times, the Etruscans and the Umbrians used this area as a passageway between valleys.
In the Middle Ages, the area was home to hermitages and abbeys founded by monks such as Saint Romuald and Saint Alberic, who chose these mountains for their spiritual retreats. In the 15th century, the mountain was contested by local families and was annexed to the Florentine Republic in 1405, linking its history to that of Tuscany for centuries.
In 1923, Benito Mussolini, for political reasons and to boost his personal prestige, altered the regional boundaries to include Monte Fumaiolo within Romagna (the province of Forlì), where he was born. This change was commemorated with the erection of a travertine stele in 1934, featuring Roman imperial symbols and an inscription affirming the importance of the source of the Tiber as a river central to the history of Rome.
During the Middle Ages and the early modern period, the area around Fumaiolo was dotted with castles, fortresses and fortifications designed to protect the borders and strategic transport routes, such as the Rocca del Còtolo, the Faggiola Vecchia and the Castellaccio – historical reminders of a region that played a crucial role in the treaties and conflicts between states and duchies.

Travel itinerary:
Depart from Rimini by car or bus (around 70 km, 1 hour 15 minutes by car). From Rimini, follow the Marecchiese road (SS258) towards Novafeltria and from there head to Monte Fumaiolo.
By public transport: take bus route 160 to Novafeltria, then a taxi or other form of transport to Monte Fumaiolo.

Excursions
Monte Fumaiolo offers a number of well-signposted and enjoyable walking routes, with a medium level of difficulty (E – walking):
A classic route of approximately 10.5 km with an elevation gain of around 450 metres, taking approximately 6 hours. It starts from the “Faggio Scritto” car park and passes by the hermitage of Sant’Alberico, Monte Aquilone (360° panoramic view), the beech woods, the grasslands and, finally, the sources of the Tiber, where there is a commemorative stele. The return route passes by mountain huts such as the Fumaiolo Paradise Hotel.
A hike from the village of ‘Prato’ (the common starting point) along CAI trails 104 (towards the spring) and 106 (towards the summit), taking around 4 hours of actual walking, with an elevation gain of around 500 metres. This route offers a more mountainous trek towards the summit of Monte Fumaiolo and the pass, with excellent views of the surrounding landscape. Ideal for those seeking a more immersive experience.
The network of trails around Monte Fumaiolo is maintained by the Cesena branch of the CAI and the “Fumaiolo Sentieri” association, comprising over 160 km of routes, including footpaths, sheep tracks and dirt tracks. The trails are clearly signposted with both vertical and horizontal signage and are suitable for walkers and cyclists.
Among the most popular walks are those that take in the source of the Tiber, the hermitage of Sant’Alberico and Monte Aquilone, passing through beech woods, meadows and scenic ridges.
Equipment tips for trekking on Monte Fumaiolo include waterproof walking boots, layered clothing, plenty of water, sunglasses and sun cream. In cooler months or for longer hikes, you should also bring a waterproof jacket and a change of clothes.
