Easter is one of the best-known Christian festivals; it commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which, according to the Holy Scriptures, took place on the third day after his death.

At 9 am on Thursday, Lent comes to an end and the Easter Triduum begins: the celebration of the Last Supper with the blessing of the bread and wine (the Eucharist); the washing of the feet; and the silencing of the bells (which do not ring until the Resurrection of Jesus).
On Fridays, the Stations of the Cross (the stages of Jesus’ journey from his arrest to his death) are observed, and Holy Communion is not received.
Saturday is a time of vigil; just as the Virgin Mary watches over her Son, the faithful keep vigil in the churches over the dead body of Jesus – a characteristic of the Saturday that precedes Easter It is characterised by the absence of any liturgical celebration (no Masses are held and the churches are bare, in mourning), whilst on Saturday night the fire is blessed, seven passages from the Old Testament are read, children are baptised and the Eucharist is celebrated.
