Tiberius Bridge

An essential stop on the way from the village of San Giuliano to the centre of Rimini, the bridge is one of Rimini’s most important monuments, dating back to Roman times.
Originally, the river flowing beneath it was the Marecchia, but its course was later diverted; construction of the Augustus Bridge began in 14 AD and was completed by Tiberius in 21 AD.
The structure, built of Istrian stone, is 62 metres long and has five supporting arches (the fifth, on the north side, was removed in 522 and rebuilt in 1600), the piers rest on a single level and are set at an angle to the bridge’s centre of gravity, to facilitate the flow of water (recent technical surveys have led to the discovery of a wooden structure supporting the entire bridge).
From the carvings and bas-reliefs visible on the façade facing the sea, it is clear that this façade was intended to be the most important, almost as if to celebrate the entry of ships into the harbour.
